A new species of bird for Nepal has been recorded in Gaidhawa, Ward No. 11 of Khaireni Municipality, Chitwan. With the addition of this species called Chinese Pond Heron (Ardiola batches), the number of birds in Nepal has reached 891.

The species, which is listed as a nomadic species for Nepal, was recorded by a team of naturalist and wildlife photographer Raju Tamang and Prem Bamjan on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at 6:35 am.

According to archivist Tamang, during the bird watching, a large bird of different sizes was seen in the husk of Ascot Vakulla in the open paddy field. Its head and back were very different in color.

The new records were submitted to the Nepal Bird Records Committee (NBRC) by the archivists for formal verification. The NBRC is a committee of ornithologists and senior ornithologists under the Nepal Ornithological Association (NOU) which certifies rare records. All the members of the committee provided independent review and agreed that the record is authentic. Tulsi Subedi said.

In 2018, the number of birds in the official checklist published by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation and Nepal Bird Conservation Federation was 886 and since then 5 new species have been added. Some of the added species have been published in journals and some are in the process of being published.

The Chinese Pond Heron is a bird that breeds in Southeast and East China, South Korea, Japan, Myanmar and Northeast India. Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries are the main non-breeding range of this species, but recently in some parts of Malaysia, this species is found breeding.

The species is also found in Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh, with an estimated global population of 25,000 to 1,000,000.
