Android Feature Drop adds 5 new features to all phones
Google today announced new features coming to all Android phones as part of its quarterly Android Feature Drop system. Much like the Pixel feature drop idea, where Google will be adding a slew of new features to its Pixel phones, batches of these regularly released features should be rolling out to all Android phones.
To make up for that drop, Google is bringing new Gboard features to everyone, including the option to pay during Google Play Points checkout, improved background noise reduction in the sound amplifier, and a new Image mode for Lookout.
Here are the details of the new features you’ll be able to use soon:
Gboard Custom Stickers: Previously only for Pixel phones, Google has unveiled custom text stickers on Gboard for everyone. Now, when you type, you’ll be able to convert that text into a custom sticker of your choice. You should start typing, then choose the emoji recommendation for those words, and then you’ll see new options to customize.
Summer and Pride Stickers in Emoji Kitchen: Another update to Gboard comes to Emoji Kitchen in the form of a bunch of stickers related to the new Summer and Pride months. You know we love emoji kitchens.
Google Play Points for Checkout: The Google Play Points rewards program will soon be seen as a payment option when checking out for in-app items. You’ll be able to cover the full cost of in-app items or split between points and your other payment methods.
Sound Amplifier Improvements: Google is updating the Sound Amplifier to better reduce background noise and bring in louder and more accurate sound. The new interface should also be easy to see.
Google Lookout’s New Image Mode: Google Lookout is being updated with a new Image Mode that can capture images and speak image details. Google is also expanding the text, document, food label and search modes, to be more precise. Lookout can now work offline as well.
All these new features will be implemented in the coming days and weeks. Just make sure you get the latest updates for each one they appear and the new features will be there eventually.
